Here’s a Fiat S76, aka the Beast of Turin.

It’s geared at 128 mph per ooo rpm in top. So at 128 mph it’s at not much more than tickover in your car.

It always boggles my mind how non-power dense old engines are. The Beast makes just over 10hp/L. Granted it does make 2000 torques.

It always amazes me how Eldorados from the 70s had even less than that

Meanwhile looking at Dyno sheets for my R50 I am seeing ~10HP and ~45ft/lbs of torque at 1000rpm (it cannot be driven at those revs, it will stall). At 1000rpm in 5th I would be doing 21.3mph. Though at 6800rpm I would be making 115hp and doing 145mph. Maybe that 150mph speedo isn’t so useless after all (who wants to help with the math to see what the actual top speed is due to aero?)

Some of them flirted with 20hp/L, but none of them managed to limbo below 10hp/L. What’s more mind-blowing about the Eldorado is that they had an 8.2L(with a whopping 210hp) V8 that was front-wheel drive.

Also looking at chassis dyno graphs it looks like either my car is underrated by about 10hp or the Midlands is about 5% more efficient than the Getrag 6 speeds in the Cooper S. The Getrag is about 84% efficient based on the test of the JCW. Using that estimation on the R50 gives a crank power of about 125HP (engine is rated at 115HP). If the engine is actually putting out its rated 115HP that makes the Midlands ~91% efficient. Not bad for a Peugeot designed transmission which was built by Rover and had a reputation for seal failures.
